Every season in life carries its own purpose—its own joys, challenges, and lessons. But what has always surprised me is how much beauty exists in the moment a season ends. That pause before the next chapter begins reminds me that endings aren’t just closures; they’re transformations. They signal that growth has taken place and that something new is quietly waiting on the other side. This month the season of my 30s ended, which was a pretty awesome decade if I do say so myself. I also made the decision to not have anymore children. That is a season that still kind of tugs at the heart strings, but let’s face it I have an 18 year old and a soon to be 17 year old, I don’t want to start over and that is okay.
Why Endings Carry Their Own Kind of Beauty
Endings often get labeled as sad or unsettling, but I’ve come to see their beauty. They hold space for reflection. They help me recognize how far I’ve come. They even bring a sense of clarity—allowing me to let go of what no longer fits. The ending of a season is like the softness of dusk: calm, necessary, and full of quiet promise. There are various emotions that bubble to the surface during endings …. sometimes it is sadness or excitement, and other times is a relief.
Lessons That Appear Only at the End
There are lessons I only notice once a season has fully ended. While I’m in it, I’m often too busy navigating the experience. But afterward, the insights appear—almost like driftwood washed ashore. I start to understand why certain things happened, how I evolved, and how much strength I didn’t realize I had built along the way. Our youngest son was a handful in his elementary and middle school years. He was diagnosed with ADHD, ODD (oppositional defiant disorder), and those school years were hard. He just entered his junior year of high school and he is doing well. I am so proud of him. That season of navigating those disorders and figuring out what works for him were so difficult. The closing of that chapter has been a relief and a sense of pride. I will be remiss if I don’t mention that if the school calls, I still panic a bit.
Letting Go and Making Space for the New
The ending of a season teaches me the art of letting go. Not everything is meant to come with me into the next chapter. Releasing old expectations, relationships, or versions of myself clears space for what’s ahead. It’s not about loss—it’s about creating room for alignment, peace, and possibility. With the mention of the panic when the school calls, I have to say that even if something happens, we discuss the situation and best ways to handle things moving forward. I do my best not to bring up his past behaviors because he has used the tools that he was taught and has grown tremendously. I just help him remember the tools and think of other alternative responses so he can prepare for anything that comes his way.
Embracing the Next Season
Every ending gently leads into a new beginning. When I embrace the closing of a season, I step into the next with more intention and awareness. I’m not rushing forward; I’m walking with clarity. That’s the true beauty of endings—they prepare me for what’s next with a deeper sense of groundedness.
