Unapologetically Amber: Living Life, Unfiltered

The Most Challenging Mindset Shift I’ve Ever Made

There are a lot of mindset shifts that sound good in theory.

Let go of control.
Trust the process.
Believe everything is working out for you.

It all sounds great… until you’re actually in a situation where things aren’t going as planned.

And you realize just how hard it is to actually live that way.

Because the most challenging mindset shift I’ve ever made has been this:
letting go of control and trusting that things will work out—even when I can’t see how.

What I Used to Believe

For a long time, I believed that if I just planned everything perfectly, stayed on track, and did everything “right,” then things would work out exactly how I wanted them to.

Especially when it came to finances.

I thought:

  • If I follow the plan, I’ll feel secure
  • If something goes off track, I’ve failed
  • If I’m not where I want to be yet, I’m doing something wrong

And without even realizing it, I created this constant pressure on myself to control every outcome.

Why This Mindset Was Keeping Me Stuck

At first, it felt productive.

It felt responsible.

But in reality, it was exhausting.

Because life doesn’t always go according to plan.
Unexpected things come up.
Timelines shift.

And every time something didn’t go exactly how I expected, I would feel:

  • Frustrated
  • Behind
  • Like I needed to “fix” something immediately

Instead of adjusting, I resisted.

Instead of trusting, I tried to control even more.

And that cycle? It kept me stuck in stress.

The Moment Things Started to Shift

The shift didn’t happen overnight.

It happened in small moments—especially when I started realizing that no matter how tightly I tried to control everything, life was still going to do what it does.

And honestly… that was frustrating at first.

But then I had this thought:

What if I don’t need to control everything to be okay?

What if I can still be doing the right things… and allow space for things to unfold?

The New Mindset I Had to Learn

Instead of thinking:

→ “Everything has to go exactly as planned”

I started practicing:

→ “I’m doing my best, and I trust that things will work out—even if it looks different than I expected.”

That doesn’t mean I stopped planning.

It doesn’t mean I stopped caring.

It just means I stopped believing that I had to control every single outcome to feel secure.

Why This Shift Was So Difficult

This mindset shift was hard because it challenged everything I was used to.

It required me to:

  • Sit in uncertainty
  • Let go of timelines
  • Trust without constant proof
  • Stop tying my worth to outcomes

And let’s be honest—there are still moments where I catch myself slipping back into old patterns.

That urge to control? It doesn’t just disappear overnight.

What Helped Me Through It

What’s helped me the most is coming back to a few simple things:

  • Reminding myself that progress is still happening, even if it’s not perfect
  • Focusing on what I can control instead of what I can’t
  • Shifting my self-talk when I start getting overwhelmed
  • Giving myself grace when things don’t go as planned

And honestly, just being aware of it has made a huge difference.

How My Life Feels Different Now

Since making this shift, I’ve noticed something really important:

I feel more at peace.

Not because everything is perfect.
Not because everything always goes my way.

But because I’m not fighting everything anymore.

I’m still working toward my goals.
I still have plans.

But I’m allowing space for life to happen too.

And that alone has changed everything.

If You’re Struggling With This Too

If you feel like you constantly need to control everything to feel okay… I get it.

I’ve been there.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

You can be responsible and trusting.
You can have goals and allow flexibility.
You can be doing everything right and still experience delays or detours.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re human.

Conclusion: Growth Requires Letting Go

The most challenging mindset shifts are the ones that ask you to release control and step into trust.

And that’s not always easy.

But sometimes, the very thing you’re trying to control… is the thing you need to loosen your grip on.

Because growth doesn’t always come from doing more.

Sometimes, it comes from learning to let go.
