Saying Goodbye to Summer: How I’m Welcoming Fall into My Home

Even though fall doesn’t technically begin until September 22, I’m more than ready to shift the energy in our home. The moment August winds down, I find myself craving coziness, color, and comfort. So, this weekend, I’m officially saying goodbye to summer and hello, fall—and I wanted to share how I’m doing that with a few simple and meaningful changes around the house.

🍁 1. Swapping Out the Decor

Let’s be honest—pumpkins make everything better. I love bringing out the fall decor this time of year.

  • I use pumpkins as centerpieces on the table.
  • I add cozy throws in rich autumn tones like mustard yellow, sage green, burnt orange, and warm browns. I drape them over the backs of chairs and couches—when the dogs let me!

Even small touches—like a fall-themed mug or a plaid table runner—can shift the vibe instantly.

🕯️ 2. Transitioning Scents

Scents are such a powerful way to shift the mood in your home. Once September rolls around, the citrus and beachy candles go back in the cabinet, and the warm, spicy scents come out to play.

  • Apple, cinnamon, clove, pumpkin spice, vanilla, and sandalwood are my go-to fall fragrance notes.
  • I stock up on seasonal candles and grab a cinnamon broom or two from the grocery store to bring that nostalgic fall scent into the air.

There’s something about walking into a cinnamon-scented room that just makes it feel like home.

🍲 3. Welcoming Fall Flavors

We also start transitioning in the kitchen by shifting the flavors on our plates.

  • Think: apples, cranberries, squash, sweet potatoes, and all things soup and stew.
  • I love making a batch of chili, a slow-cooked chicken and rice soup, or even just slicing up apples with cinnamon and nut butter.
  • Baked goods are another favorite—pumpkin muffins, apple crisps, or spiced oatmeal cookies are some staples I look forward to baking this time of year.

Fall is the season of warm-from-the-inside-out foods, and I’m here for it.

🍂 4. Switching the Mood with Music & Lighting

One of my favorite cozy tricks? Soft ambient lighting and seasonal playlists.

  • I start using more lamps and twinkle lights to bring in a softer glow during the evenings.
  • I’ll pop on a “Fall Coffeehouse” or “Acoustic Autumn” playlist while cooking or cleaning. It immediately changes the atmosphere and makes everything feel a little slower and more intentional.

🍃 5. Embracing the Energy of Slowing Down

More than just decor and flavors, fall reminds me to pause and turn inward. I start to journal more. I find myself reaching for books and blankets rather than rushing out the door. This is the time of year where we’re invited to slow down and reflect.

And honestly, I love creating a space in my home that reflects that. A space where we can rest, gather, and simply be.
