Hard Life Lessons: Growth, Patience, and Letting Go of What’s Not Personal

Life teaches us many lessons — and sometimes, those lessons are the hardest to learn.

This past year has taught me so much. One of the biggest lessons? That just because I want something or feel like I deserve something doesn’t mean it’s aligned with what I need in that moment. Sometimes, it means letting others have their turn to experience opportunities — and trusting that, when it’s right, your moment will come. That’s patience. It’s a reminder to stay true to yourself while allowing space for your feelings — but also staying kind, helpful, and grounded. Even when things feel unfair or harsh, you don’t lose who you are.

Another major lesson: you must take care of yourself. Mental health deeply impacts physical health. I pushed myself too far — said “yes” too often — and it caught up with me. I wasn’t sleeping (or I was sleeping too much). I couldn’t focus. I wasn’t present for the people I love. So I stopped. I made the hard decision to let go of what was draining me. And life taught me this: sometimes, you need to hit pause.

I’ve also learned that I must teach my children this truth: people don’t care how you feel. That doesn’t give anyone permission to be unkind — but it means people aren’t obligated to adjust their beliefs or actions because of your emotions. You can do your research, speak passionately, and still not change minds. Just look at politics: our nation is divided, and too often conversations focus on “how we feel” rather than facts, data, and solutions. If we could stop taking things personally and start listening — truly listening — we might make progress. We might rebuild bridges.

To sum it up: life is hard. Life gives us lessons we didn’t ask for. But if we pause, reflect, and consider how we’ve reacted — and how we’ve grown — we’ll see that personal growth is essential. Your feelings matter — to you. But most of life isn’t personal. And those moments that feel deeply personal? That’s when we need to pause, reflect, and learn.
