Family Visits, Beach Days & Burnt Knees: A Memorial Week Recap and What’s Ahead

Sunday Reflections: A Week of Family, Sunshine, and Life’s Little Moments

It’s Sunday, and you know what that means—time to take a breath and recap the past week. This one has been full, meaningful, and, honestly, a little exhausting (in the best way).

Last week, my parents came into town for a long-overdue visit, and we packed in as much fun as we could. We kicked things off with grocery shopping and BBQing for Memorial Day. It was a lovely way to honor the day—great food, laughter, and being together.

The next day, we ventured to Old Charles Towne Landing. I may have walked my mom to death, but the payoff was worth it—we spotted a bald eagle and its nest! The beauty of nature never fails to amaze. Later, we recharged at the Icehouse, where I devoured one of the best BBQ cheeseburgers I’ve ever had. It was chef’s kiss perfection.

Wednesday was beach day. The sun was bright, and despite the gloomy morning skies, the weather turned out amazing. That said, I have a confession: I’m a total wimp when it comes to cold water. At 77°F, it’s still too chilly for me. I’m a fan of that luxurious 80+ degree “bathwater” vibe. Oh, and I managed to get the strangest splotchy sunburn—don’t ask how!

Thursday brought us to Firefly Distillery for some much-needed grown-up fun. We sampled whiskey and vodka—delicious, smooth, and exactly the break we needed.

Friday marked the last day of school (yay, summer!) so we took a stroll down the pier to celebrate. Then, Saturday morning came far too quickly, and it was time to say goodbye to my parents. Though they arrived with full bags, they left with even more—new skincare, clothes for my mom, and some homemade vanilla extract I made just for them.

This weekend has been quieter but still full. I tackled my normal errands and caught up on a show I had missed. I also made more progress on my doctoral manuscript, which I submitted for review today! Another step forward.

Later today, our youngest has a graduation party, and we’ll also be shopping for more formal clothes. One of his friends recently passed from cancer, and the celebration of life is this Friday. It’s been an emotional time, but we want him to feel comfortable and respectful.

This coming week? Buckle up—it’s packed:

  • Multiple doctor’s appointments
  • My oldest is having his wisdom teeth removed (rescheduled to Friday)
  • Back to work and diving deeper into doctoral research

Whew, I’m already tired thinking about it.

That’s my week in a nutshell—and a preview of the one ahead. What about you? How was your Memorial Day? Any plans you’re looking forward to this week? I’d love to hear in the comments below.

Until next Sunday,
Rest, recharge, and remember the little joys.
