Ditch the 5-Year Plan: Why Living in the Moment Still Moves You Forward

I’m not currently job hunting, but every now and then I find myself thinking about that classic interview question:
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

Honestly? Half the time, I don’t even know what I want for dinner.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m a goal girly through and through. I love dreaming big, setting intentions, and watching things come to life. But trying to map out where I’ll be in five years feels… overwhelming. And maybe even a little limiting. Life is full of so many possibilities, and I’ve learned (the hard way) that when I make plans, God often has different ones in store.

So here’s my thought: let’s give up the pressure of the five-year plan. Let’s stop trying to script the entire future and instead, focus on today.

Yes, I still set yearly goals. I manifest. I visualize. But I hold them loosely—open to pivots, redirection, and divine timing. Because let’s face it, sometimes the detour is the destination.

When we stay present and in alignment with our faith, we are more open to receive. We’re better able to take intentional, aligned action. We’re grounded. And from that space? The right opportunities, relationships, and blessings come when they’re meant to.

“By focusing on the here and now, you are able to take actionable steps toward your desires—and with faith, God will gift them to you when you are in alignment with His will.”

That’s a truth I’ve experienced time and time again.

So no—I don’t know where I’ll be in five years. I have hopes, yes. But I’m not building a rigid plan. I’m building a life that’s flexible, rooted in purpose, and open to what’s next.

Here’s What I’m Focusing on Instead:

  • 💭 Setting yearly (and sometimes quarterly) goals with flexibility
  • 🙏 Practicing gratitude for what is right now
  • 🧘‍♀️ Staying grounded with small, consistent habits
  • 📖 Trusting that God’s plan is bigger than my own
  • ✨ Manifesting with action, not control

Thoughts for You:

  1. How does the idea of a five-year plan make you feel? Does it motivate you—or stress you out?
  2. What’s one thing you can do today that supports the life you’re calling in?
  3. Is there an area where you need to surrender the timeline? Sometimes letting go is where real alignment begins.

If nothing else, let this be your permission slip:
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just have to show up—present, faithful, and willing.
