It’s almost fall, and with this wonderful season comes a few extra expenses. Honestly, it’s my favorite time of year—I love the smells, the cooler air (even though we don’t get much of that here in the Lowcountry), and all the fun activities. But let’s be honest: fall can bring some costs that aren’t typical throughout the year. Here’s how my family handles these additional fall expenses without overspending.
1. Start Early on Halloween Candy
We started buying one large bag of candy for Halloween during our weekly Costco or BJ’s shopping trips in August. This helps us avoid a big expense all at once. Plus, buying early means we can grab deals and use coupons to save extra cash. With a lot of kids in our neighborhood, we went through nine bags last year—so planning ahead is a must!
2. Save on Pumpkins and Fall Décor
We’re known as the “pumpkin house” in our neighborhood because most of our decorations involve pumpkins! The big décor pieces we already own, so we don’t plan on splurging there this year. For real pumpkins, we wait until closer to Halloween and usually buy from a warehouse club for better deals.
3. DIY Decorations for Extra Savings
Instead of buying new decorations every year, consider DIY projects. Use items you already have—mason jars, leaves, and candles—to create cozy fall vibes on a budget.
4. Plan Ahead for Seasonal Activities
Hayrides, pumpkin patches, and fall festivals are so much fun but can add up quickly. Check local event calendars early and look for free or low-cost events. Many farms offer discounts on certain days or bundle deals.
5. Budget for Thanksgiving Now
Don’t forget Thanksgiving! Start picking up non-perishable items early when they go on sale—canned goods, pie filling, and baking ingredients. Spreading out the cost makes the holiday much easier on your wallet.
