The Power of Listening to Your Body: Why Self-Care Is More Than a Small Win

At first, I was going to write about small wins. Then I thought, maybe I should focus on self-care. And that’s when it hit me—acknowledging when you need to take care of yourself? That’s not just a small win… that’s a huge one.

As a wife and a mom, it’s easy to fall into the routine of doing everything for everyone else first. I know I’m not alone in that. But recently, I had a moment where I put myself first—because I had to. And I’m really glad I did.

It was a Monday, and I had maybe two or three hours of sleep the night before. If you’ve ever lived with a chronic illness, you know that rest isn’t optional—it’s essential. When I woke up, I already felt behind. Every breath felt heavy, and every muscle ached. Deep down, I knew what I needed: a day to rest.

I don’t take off work often, but I listened to my body. I texted my supervisor and let them know I needed the day. Thankfully, they were supportive and encouraged me to take the time I needed.

🌿 What Self-Care Looked Like That Day

It wasn’t glamorous. I still had to swing by the store early to pick up a few essentials. But once I got home, I gave myself permission to slow down.

I didn’t just lay around—but I did things that made me feel good:

  • I caught up on a few shows I’d been meaning to watch.
  • I cut, filed, and painted my nails and toes.
  • I made sure I took my vitamins and my medicine.
  • Most importantly, I allowed myself to just be.

At one point I thought, “Maybe I should clean or declutter something.” But my body quickly reminded me: not today. I was still aching—not as bad as when I woke up—but enough to know that pushing myself would only make tomorrow harder.

So I rested.

And I’m so glad I did.

Acknowledging when your body or mind needs care is powerful. It’s not lazy. It’s not selfish. It’s not something to feel guilty about.

It’s self-respect.

Sometimes self-care is a long bath, a walk outside, or a girls’ night. Other times it’s painting your toenails and turning on a show you love, even when there are dishes in the sink.

So the next time your body whispers, “Slow down,” listen.
