School is officially back in session, and just like that—I’m deep in the back-to-school routine again. This year, I have a senior and a sophomore. Let that sink in. Time really does fly when you’re raising boys and juggling life.
While I’m beyond excited for everything this year will bring—especially graduation—I also know the shift from summer freedom to school structure can be jarring. Our routine looks different now, but some things are staying the same.
I’m still keeping my morning skincare, gratitude journaling, and a few personal rituals that help ground me. But with school back on, I’m back in full-on mom mode. That means making lunches (yes, I still pack my youngest son’s lunch—because I can), getting them to school, and helping my eldest build confidence behind the wheel as he works toward getting his license. We’re still in the permit phase, so mom’s taxi service is in full swing.
On school days, I also start work earlier to accommodate our new schedule. I forgot how that feels—working early, squeezing in chores, and jumping back into focus throughout the day. It’s a lot, but it’s the rhythm of the season.
Afternoons? That’s when the real multitasking kicks in. School pickup, feeding the dogs, making dinner, and coordinating whatever ROTC meetings or school events the kids have. This is why meal planning is on my radar—I need to know what’s for dinner before 6 p.m. hits and I’m too tired to think.
Before bed, I prep for the next day: checking calendars, reviewing to-do lists, signing permission slips, and making sure the boys are on top of their homework (teenage boys definitely need reminders!). I clean my desk so I can focus in the morning, and I make sure everyone’s gear is ready to go.
This transition from summer to school is never seamless. Our mornings get louder, our days more structured, and our evenings a bit more chaotic. But routines—and a solid planner—keep me sane.
My husband also ramps up at work when school starts. As a district administrator, his schedule gets intense. So we adapt together, one moving part at a time. As Marie Forleo says, “Everything is figureoutable.” And she’s right.
How’s your back-to-school transition going? Are your routines working—or are you still adjusting? Share your tips (or vent your chaos) in the comments—I’d love to hear how other families are handling the shift.
