Halfway Through the Year: How to Prepare Now for a Stress-Free Finish

Can you believe it? The year is halfway gone! Now is the perfect time to look ahead and set ourselves up for success in the months to come. Life will always throw us curveballs, but preparing for what we know is coming can ease stress, save money, and make the remainder of the year more enjoyable. Let’s explore how we can help our future selves today.

🎒 July: Back-to-School Prep

If you have kids, July is the ideal time to start gathering school supplies. When you spot sales, pick up one or two items instead of waiting for the last-minute back-to-school rush. This spreads out the financial impact and avoids the chaos of packed stores.

It’s also smart to keep an eye out for deals on clothing and shoes. Just remember — kids seem to hit a growth spurt the second school starts, so you may be revisiting this task by winter break!

👉 Bonus tip: Start your Christmas shopping early. I know, I know — but spacing out purchases over more paychecks helps ease that December financial crunch. Future-you (and Santa) will be grateful!

🎃 August-September: Halloween + More Holiday Prep

You might think it’s too early to think about Halloween, but not in our house! With so many kids in our neighborhood, we go through a ton of candy. We’ve found that buying one big bag of candy each week from Costco or BJ’s makes it manageable (and budget-friendly).

And hey — if you spot a great Christmas gift in these months, grab it. The closer you get to the holidays, the harder it gets to shop stress-free.

🍂 October: Fall Into Holiday Planning

For us, October means:

✅ Starting to save for pet care while we visit family during the holidays.
✅ Gradually adding non-perishables for our Thanksgiving meal to our grocery list.
✅ Keeping our eyes out for more Christmas presents.
✅ Taking time to celebrate our anniversary with a special dinner — a little reward in the midst of the prep!

🕯️ November: Reflection + Final Prep

November is when I begin reflecting on the coming year — setting goals, thinking about what I want to learn or accomplish, and mentally preparing for a fresh start.

It’s also when we try to wrap up holiday shopping (though I admit, my kids are tough to shop for — they seem to have everything!).

🎄 December: Enjoy the Season

By December, the focus is on soaking in the season. If we’ve done our early prep well, we can (hopefully) avoid the overwhelm and focus on creating peaceful, joyful moments. Even if we’re busy, those small moments of calm make it worth it.

💡 Final Thoughts

These small steps — spreading out purchases, preparing early, setting aside savings — truly help protect our mental health and our wallets as the year winds down.
