Finding Light in the Storm: Staying Motivated When Life Gets Tough

When times get tough, they really get tough. I recently hit one of those moments and realized I was juggling too many responsibilities without taking care of myself. The biggest decision? Withdrawing from school. As soon as I made the call, I felt an unexpected burden lift. I’m still not sure exactly what that meant—but I’ve come to accept that’s okay.

Let’s talk about staying motivated when life feels like it’s spiraling.

1. Mental Health Is a Motivator

For me, recognizing the decline in my mental health was the wake-up call I needed. I was emotionally drained and needed space to simply be. Prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. If you’re overwhelmed, taking a break might be the most productive step you can take.

2. Be Present with Those You Love

I’ve come to appreciate the small moments with my family more deeply. My kids are growing up fast, and I want to be there. Rewatching favorite shows, talking about their art, or trying (and usually failing) to play Xbox with them—it all counts. (Give me a Sega or OG Nintendo, though, and it’s on.)

3. Faith Carries Me

My faith is a cornerstone during hard times. The decision to step back wasn’t made lightly—it came with prayer and deep reflection. But I know that no matter what I face, God is with me. That assurance keeps me grounded and gives me peace, even in chaos.

4. Lean on Your People

Support systems are gold. I’m blessed with a few amazing people who let me vent, cry, and then help me put the pieces back together. That kind of empathy—just being there—is a motivator on its own. Knowing you’re not alone can be the difference between giving up and getting through.

5. Do Something, Anything

Some people go for runs. Not me—unless a bear is chasing me (and even then, I might try to pet it). 😄
But action helps. Whether it’s cooking, writing, cleaning, or just going for a walk, doing something physical or creative can break the mental fog and help process emotions.

So, How Do You Stay Motivated?

We all have different ways of navigating hard times. But one truth remains: storms don’t last forever. Eventually, the sun comes back—and sometimes, there’s even a rainbow. Life will test us, but God’s promises endure.

Let this post remind you: It’s okay to pause. It’s okay to need help. And it’s more than okay to prioritize your well-being.
