Ever wondered what working from home really looks like behind the scenes? Let’s break down a typical day in my life—dogs, kids, coffee, contracts—and how that day shifts when school is in session.
☀️ Summer Schedule
My husband and I usually wake up around 4:30–5:00 a.m. to let the dogs out and feed them. Yes, that early! Once they’re settled, we both sneak back into bed until about 7:00.
From there, it’s time to get ready for the workday. I log in around 8:30 a.m. and get straight into emails, contracts, and scheduling. Since school is out for summer, I don’t have the added task of school drop-off, which saves some time in the morning.
I often don’t take a real lunch break. I sip on coffee and water throughout the morning and usually feel hungry around 1:00 p.m. Instead of a full meal, I grab snacks like Slim Jims, Sargento’s Breaks, or crackers. I recently discovered the “Tiffany Plates” on TikTok and I might give those a try—they look like a fun way to make snack plates feel special!
Even while eating, I’m usually reading for school or researching, taking notes as I go.
📚 When School’s in Session
School mornings shift my day significantly. In addition to my regular routine, I’m:
- Waking the kids up
- Packing lunches
- Driving them to school by 9:30 a.m.
Then it’s back to work until around 4:00 p.m., when I pick them up, feed the dogs, and start dinner—all while still working on emails and projects.
🐶 Throughout the Day…
There’s never really a break. I’m:
- Talking on the phone
- Texting
- Listening to background TV for company
- Taking the dogs out
- Walking through the garden for a 5-minute mental refresh
Evenings are for unwinding or continuing my research. I usually shut down my work between 5–6 p.m., though some days I keep going.
🧼 Where I Need Help: Housework
One thing I struggle with? Incorporating housework during the week. I tend to leave it all for the weekend, which overwhelms me. I’d love to build in small cleaning bursts to lighten the load. Got any tips?
