Spoiler: This post is a bit personal and just a reflection on faith and on the devotional I have been reading daily since January 1. Please note that I am choosing to use the term “God” and you can replace that with Universe or Higher Power.
There are moments in our faith journey when God feels unusually quiet. We pray, we journal, we seek answers — and yet, nothing. The silence can feel discouraging or confusing, especially when we’re doing everything “right.” But quiet does not mean absence. Stillness does not mean abandonment. And as my daily devotional Sitting With Jesus by Tera Elness reminds me again and again: even in our hardest times, in our darkest days, and in the moments we feel most alone, Jesus is there. He is with us. And that truth is simply amazing.
The Purpose Behind God’s Quiet Seasons
God’s silence often serves a purpose, even when we can’t see it in the moment. Sometimes He is preparing your heart. Sometimes He is orchestrating circumstances behind the scenes. Sometimes He is strengthening your trust by inviting you to walk by faith rather than confirmation. The quiet season isn’t punishment — it’s preparation. I often think of Sarah during these times; she wanted a child so badly and she even laughed at the idea of being pregnant at the age of 90, but God did that. He allowed her to become a mother even at 90! All the times when she could have been pregnant were designed for her to give birth at the right time to John the Baptist.
Remembering What You Know, Not What You Feel
Feelings shift with circumstances, but truth stays anchored. When emotions whisper, “You’re alone,” Scripture counters, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” When fear creeps in, truth reminds us that God is faithful, steady, and present even when we cannot sense Him. Sitting With Jesus consistently points back to this truth: no matter how quiet it feels, Jesus is still sitting with you, comforting you, and guiding you through every moment. In times of grief, I think this is the most important reminder. I may not understand why someone left us on Earth, especially when it is a younger person, and to be fair it is not my job or business to understand. I can be angry and question the why, but I know God is in the room with me. He is listening and He knows that I will not be able to understand until I am back in my heavenly home, but He is there.
Practices That Help You Stay Connected When God Feels Quiet
Quieting your mind often helps you notice God’s presence again. A simple breath prayer — “Jesus, be near” on the inhale and “I trust You” on the exhale — can bring peace to a weary heart. Sometimes the Word speaks when our emotions can’t. Returning to Scripture, or to devotionals like Sitting With Jesus, helps re‑anchor the heart. Tera Elness continually reminds readers that Jesus is present even in seasons that feel silent, and that reassurance can shift everything. Gratitude softens worry. Surrender quiets fear. When God feels silent, offering thanks — even for small things — helps your heart stay open. And surrendering what you cannot control invites God to work freely in your life.
God’s Quiet Is Not God’s Absence
Just because God isn’t speaking loudly doesn’t mean He isn’t working deeply. Quiet seasons often become the turning points of our testimony. God is forming, refining, redirecting, and strengthening you — often in ways you will only recognize in hindsight. Have you ever had an unanswered prayer be a complete blessing in disguise? Yea, me too. I think those are the big reminders that God knows what is best for us and is always guiding us to our greater good.
Trust the Process, Because Jesus Is Near
Even when God feels quiet, He is closer than your breath. As Sitting With Jesus so beautifully reminds us, Jesus is with you in the highs, the lows, the unknowns, and the in‑betweens. Trust the process. Trust His timing. Trust that the silence is shaping something sacred. You are not alone — not for one moment.
