Choosing Simplicity in a Culture of More

We live in a culture that glorifies accumulation. The more possessions we have, the more productive we can be, the more commitments we can handle, the more success we will have. Everywhere we turn, we are subtly told that happiness lies in the next purchase, milestone, or upgrade. Yet for many of us, the pursuit of “more” leaves us feeling overwhelmed rather than fulfilled. Choosing simplicity is not about deprivation; it is about creating space for what truly matters.

I faced the feeling of needing to chase more in so many different areas of my life. As a nurturer, I want to solve people’s problems and money helps solve people’s problems. I also have a hard time saying “no” to things that the ones I love want. I have also chased having a certain aesthetic that I realizes changes more often than I could ever imagine. This has been bad for my pocketbook so I have had to learn that “more” is not what I need. A more simplistic lifestyle that truly aligns with me is a much better feel. I have also let go of needing to feel as if everyone likes my aesthetic. What is comfortable for me, may not be comfortable for you and that is okay.

The Emotional Weight of Excess

Excess often carries invisible emotional weight. A cluttered home can create mental noise, packed schedules can lead to burnout, and constant comparison can leave us feeling inadequate. When our lives become crowded with too much, we lose clarity and connection with ourselves. Simplicity invites us to release what drains us so we can reclaim calm and presence. I am currently in the process, and it feels like I am always in this process, of decluttering my home. One drawer at a time. The physical clutter weighs on my emotions because it makes me feel like my home is not as clean or organized as I want it to be. This creates stress and ultimately needs to be let go because it is weighing on my mental health.

Redefining What “Enough” Means

Choosing simplicity requires redefining what enough means on your own terms. Instead of measuring success by how much we accomplish, we begin to ask deeper questions: What truly adds value to my life? What brings peace instead of pressure? When we shift from scarcity-driven striving to intentional contentment, we discover that enough is often much less than we were taught to believe. Imagine how your life would look if you defined abundance by peace instead of possessions. The Freedom Found in Letting Go

There is freedom found in letting go of what no longer serves you, whether it is material clutter, unrealistic expectations, toxic obligations, or the need to impress others. Every act of simplifying creates breathing room. It allows you to focus your time, energy, and heart on what aligns with your deepest values rather than external pressure. One thing I need to release today that will create more space in my life is my kitchen! My open concept home is fantastic, but when there are always things on the counter tops or on the island it can feel like one big, never ending, clutter storm. So I need to figure it out and let the stuff go so I can feel better in my home.

Practical Ways to Embrace Simplicity Daily

Simplicity begins in small choices: saying no to unnecessary commitments, decluttering one drawer at a time, spending intentionally, and protecting quiet moments in your day. It can mean choosing slower mornings, fewer distractions, and more mindful consumption. The beauty of simplicity is that it is deeply personal, what matters is creating rhythms that support peace rather than pressure. One habit that I am trying to work towards is getting up earlier and doing a simple exercise routine and a 30 minute walk. I need to do this for my health, both mental and physical. I thought about doing it in the evenings, but realize that will not work for me. So I am going to try to start this habit so I can embrace my day in a healthful manner. It will also allow me to check off one goal and we all know that even the smallest goal checked off can feel like a huge accomplishment and setting your day up for success.

Simplicity As a Form of Inner Peace

When we choose simplicity, we are not choosing less life; we are choosing a fuller one. A simpler life creates space for gratitude, presence, and genuine joy. It reminds us that peace is not found in the excess, but in alignment. In a world obsessed with more, simplicity becomes a quiet rebellion that leads us back to ourselves. For me, a more simplistic morning routine has allowed me time to focus on my spiritual health, my mental health, and my financial health. It has given me the opportunity to share my blog, complete a vlog, and focus on gratitude. It has completely changed the game for me.

Closing Reflection

Choosing simplicity is an invitation to step off the treadmill of endless striving and return to what is essential. It is a conscious decision to value peace over pressure, meaning over excess, and presence over performance. In letting go of more, we often find the very thing we were seeking all along: enough.
