Have you ever wished you could go to the gym one time and come out skinnier and fit? Yea, me too, but unfortunately that is not the way it works. It is a process that doesn’t happen overnight and sometimes you do not see results for a long time. There’s a phase in every journey where nothing seems to be happening, it isn’t just gym results! You’re putting in the work, showing up consistently, doing the “right” things and yet the results aren’t showing. This in-between stage can feel discouraging, but it’s actually where most of the real transformation happens. Trusting the process isn’t blind optimism; it is choosing to believe in your effort long before the evidence appears.
For me, debt reduction is a journey I am currently on and although I can see that I am paying my bills, sometimes it feels like invisible progress. I am not paying it off as fast as I’d like or I think yes, the card is paid off, but there is a small interest charge and I have to pay an additional $3 of accrued interest. Talk about a gut punch! However, I know that if I am consistent in utilizing the snowball method, the debts will be paid off a lot faster than if I were just sticking to minimum payments each month! Progress, even if invisible, is still progress. (You know your girl is not currently seeing any savings in her checkbook just yet, but it will come!)
Understanding That Progress Isn’t Always Linear
We tend to expect progress to look like a straight upward line…. step one, step two, step three, success! But in reality, growth often looks like three steps forward, two steps back, a long pause, and then a sudden leap. This doesn’t mean you are failing; it means you are human! Let’s go back to the gym. Individuals who start working out may not see the scale move for months, which can be very discouraging, but they may notice that their clothes are starting to feel better. If we go back to my debt clearing, I paid off my TJ Maxx card in January and recently I made a trip to TJ Maxx and used that card. My goal was not to utilize the card if it was paid off, but one very important distinction is I was able to pay that card off immediately! I did it! I had the funds to do it. Would I have the funds available before? Probably not. Would I have the forethought to pay it off before interest could accrue? Probably not. Your girl is learning! Look at me!
Reframing “No Results” to “Preparation”
Just because something isn’t visible doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Your habits are preparing you. Your consistency is preparing you. The small, quiet actions you take every day are building the foundation for results you won’t see until later. Think of roots growing underground – they are invisible, but essential for the bloom.
What small actions are building your foundation right now?
For me, it is paying off a credit card immediately, if it is used after I paid off the initial balance. I don’t carry a balance forward on those cards anymore. I also try to anticipate the needs of our home with my budgeting prior to utilization of a credit card. I had every intention of using my Christmas gift card on my TJ Maxx purchase, but I went a little over budget and knew I could pay it right off so I utilized the card. My daily practice of tracking my income, including any discounts I receive, and budgeting daily has helped me intimately understand my finances better.
Managing the Emotional Side of Waiting
Waiting can be emotionally heavy. You start questioning your abilities, your timing, or even the path you’re on. It’s important to validate those feelings without letting them dictate your decisions. Feeling discouraged doesn’t mean the process isn’t working; it just means you’re human and you care about the outcome. Examples of this can include: “Why is everyone passing me?,” “What if I’m wasting my time?”, or “Shouldn’t I be further along by now?” It is vital that we don’t compare ourselves to each other. We are all on our own journey. We reach our milestones, when we reach them and it doesn’t diminish you at all if it takes longer for you than it does someone else you know!
For me, I have made a conscious effort to say no coffee at coffee shops until I pay off a debt. I have literally tracked three financial goals with three rewards. I will share them with you now and it is super personal: Pay off a particular medical bill = coffee trip; pay off QVC card = purchase a table cloth (you know we are romanticizing our life with that choice…. if you don’t know what I am talking about, check out yesterday’s blog), pay off taxes = celebrate with a nice (High Cotton?) dinner. I also have three others currently and I will share them here too because your girl has big goals….. pay off home depot card = coffee trip, pay off amazon card = get a new book to read, and pay off credit one = new outfit! I am so excited about all these rewards, but it can wear on my patience especially the books! I love to read.
Building Systems That Carry You When Motivation Doesn’t
When results aren’t showing, motivation tends to disappear first. That’s why systems matter more than bursts of inspiration. A system can be as simple as a 20-minute daily habit, a weekly checklist, or a scheduled time in your calendar. When motivation fades, the system steps in to keep you moving.
You can do the following:
- A writing ritual that happens every morning at 8 a.m.
- A fitness schedule you follow regardless of energy level. (wish I was that motivated)
- A monthly budget check-in to keep you financially aligned
For me, I budget daily, every morning. I also track all income, including any discounts. I am thankful for every dollar, every discount, every bit of abundance that comes my way. I fully believe that my daily gratitude also keeps me motivated. I just realized, I used to do a 20 minute walk each morning and listened to my favorite podcasts or my morning playlist and have gotten out of the habit. I need to start that back up, but before I wouldn’t allow myself coffee until it was done. I can reward myself with not allowing a Mountain Dew Zero to cross my lips until I got that done moving forward. (Thank you brain for coming up with self-motivation while encouraging others!) Gratitude always!
How To Stay Consistent Without Burnout
Consistency doesn’t mean pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion. Consistency is about showing up regularly at a pace you can maintain. Even tiny actions compounded over time become powerful! The goal is never perfection – it is consistency! One thing I have read and learned really helped me in my motivation towards any goal is to just complete one task, even if small, provides so much gratification. I recently just cleared and cleaned one countertop. Not a big deal right? No! However, it was a huge accomplishment for me. I went through and decluttered items, moved things that are rarely used into our closet, and just was able to clean the granite and make everything beautiful. Does it relate to my money goals? Not necessarily, but it made me feel good and gave me the motivation to continue doing well in other areas of my life.
Recognizing Signs of Growth That Aren’t Measurable
Sometimes the first signs of progress aren’t external, they’re internal. You become more patient, more confident, more skilled, more disciplined. You start showing up more easily. You stop quitting when it gets hard. These shifts matter, even when no one else can see them. One very important change I have noticed in myself is reframing my thoughts. I have been working on self-development for well over a year now and negative self-talk is huge for me. I try not to do it, but I find myself capable of being the best at it at times. However, recently I noticed that anytime I have negative self-talk, I immediately recognize it and shift that perspective. It is a huge thing that only I know and it cannot be measured by anything else, but I am making progress!
Learning to Release the Timeline
One of the hardest parts of trusting the process is letting go of your personal timeline. You think you should have achieved something by a certain age, a certain date, or after a certain number of tries. But progress doesn’t follow arbitrary timelines. When you release the timeline, you release unnecessary pressure, and progress often comes faster. For me, I really want to help other women with mindset and manifestation. I wanted to be able to do this a while ago, but I realized I needed to shift my own mindset and continue my manifestation practices daily. I also still haven’t pulled the trigger on making my coaching skills available, although if you are interested, let me know. This is actually the first time I have publicly said this is my goal so perhaps that will be the first step. I started writing this blog though and putting it out there. Letting the world see what I have learned, what I am still learning, and how I am going to make it. I have said numerous times that I will be the first millionaire, but not only millionaire, multi-millionaire in my family. Do I know where all that money will come from or when it will happen? Nope! I sure don’t, but I know it will and when it does, just remember you heard it here first.
Trust is a Skill, Not a Feeling
Trusting the process isn’t passive, and it isn’t about blind faith. It’s an active decision that you make every day, especially when the results aren’t visible yet. It is choosing to keep showing up, to keep nurturing your habits, and to believe that growth is happening underneath the surface. In time, the results will come, often all at once, long after you almost gave up.
