I recently watched a series of videos on wardrobes, style, and decluttering the closet, and it reinforced concepts I first learned in Style Therapy. If I’m being honest, I’m still growing in this area. So I decided to write it out — and share it — because sometimes the act of processing publicly helps us step into alignment privately.
Your wardrobe is more than fabric and hangers. It’s identity. It’s energy. It’s how you show up in the world.
And if we’re evolving, our closets should evolve too.
Step One: Declutter With Honesty
The first step is simple — but not always easy.
Decluttering means removing:
- Items that no longer fit your body
- Items you put on and immediately take off
- Pieces you constantly “pass over”
- Clothing tied to a past version of you
If you’re not wearing it, why is it taking up space?
The recommendation was to declutter at least twice a year. This creates rhythm. It prevents buildup. It keeps your wardrobe intentional instead of accidental.
A helpful mindset shift: you are not getting rid of clothes — you are creating clarity.
Step Two: Organize in a Way That Makes Sense to You
After decluttering, organize your clothing in a way that feels intuitive.
You might group by:
- Long sleeve vs. short sleeve
- Prints vs. solids
- Workwear vs. casual
- Color family
- Occasion
There is no “perfect” system — only the one that makes getting dressed easier.
The goal is visibility. When you can see what you have, you use what you own.
Step Three: Identify and Fill Wardrobe Gaps
We all have wardrobe gaps.
Maybe you have plenty of statement pieces but no basics. Maybe you have tops but no versatile bottoms. Maybe you love dresses but don’t have layering pieces.
Once your closet is decluttered and organized, the gaps become obvious.
Instead of impulse shopping, you shop strategically.
This is where intention replaces emotion.
Rotate Seasonally (But Keep Layering Pieces Handy)
It was recommended to rotate non-seasonal items every six months. Store away what you won’t wear, and bring forward what aligns with the current season.
However, keep layering staples accessible year-round:
- Neutral cardigans
- Classic denim
- Blazers
- Lightweight jackets
Layering creates versatility — and versatility saves money.
Build Around a Color Scheme
One of the most impactful suggestions was choosing a color scheme.
Select colors:
- You love
- That complement your skin tone
- That mix and match easily
When your wardrobe shares a cohesive palette, everything works together. Getting dressed becomes effortless.
You can also create theme days:
- Mondays & Saturdays: Athleisure
- Midweek: Elevated casual
- Fridays: Statement piece day
This reduces decision fatigue and increases confidence.
Choose Your Outfit the Night Before
This tip felt nostalgic. I used to do this as a teenager — and it helped tremendously.
Choosing your outfit the night before:
- Saves time in the morning
- Reduces stress
- Allows extra sleep
- Encourages intentional dressing
You wake up prepared instead of reactive.
Create a Digital Wardrobe
One tip that made me smile (because it reminded me of Clueless) was creating an online wardrobe.
There are apps that allow you to photograph and catalog your clothing, helping you plan outfits digitally. One mentioned was Indyx, which offers both free and paid versions.
Benefits of a digital wardrobe:
- Track what you actually wear
- Build outfits in advance
- Prevent duplicate purchases
- Maximize what you already own
It’s organization meeting technology — and honestly, kind of genius.
Additional Considerations for an Aligned Closet
If we’re talking about growth and mindset, your wardrobe is part of the conversation.
Ask yourself:
- Does my closet reflect who I am becoming?
- Do I feel confident in what I wear?
- Am I dressing for my current life — or my past one?
Decluttering isn’t just physical. It’s energetic.
When you clear space, you signal readiness.
Final Thoughts: Dress for the Version of You You’re Growing Into
I’m still navigating this area — and that’s okay. Growth is not perfection.
But I do know this: when our external world aligns with our internal evolution, life flows more smoothly.
Your wardrobe doesn’t have to be massive. It doesn’t have to be trendy. It just needs to feel like you.
And if you’re evolving — maybe it’s time your closet did too.
