If you’re craving a thriller packed with secrets, tension, and a hometown filled with more questions than answers, Not What She Seems by Yasmin Angoe delivers from start to finish. This novel follows a young woman who returns to her hometown after a death in the family, only to discover that the past she left behind isn’t as settled as she thought. From the moment she arrives, she’s surrounded by whispers, hidden motives, and long-buried truths that demand to be uncovered.
I loved how Yasmin Angoe builds a setting that feels claustrophobic in the best way—where every character seems to know more than they’re letting on. Rumors swirl, old relationships resurface, and the tension builds with each chapter as the main character begins to piece together what really happened all those years ago.
I won’t lie—the first two chapters were foundational and moved a bit slower for me, mostly because I was impatiently waiting for the real chase to begin. But trust me… once the plot kicks in, it takes off fast and absolutely does not disappoint. The twists are sharp, the pacing tight, and the emotional stakes surprisingly deep. Angoe masterfully layers suspense with character development, making every reveal hit even harder.
By the time I reached the final chapters, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Every twist felt intentional, surprising, and perfectly timed. It’s one of those thrillers where you think you can predict the ending—but you’re wrong every time.
If you love suspenseful reads with secrets, tension, and dramatic unravelings, Not What She Seems is a 10/10 must-read. I genuinely enjoyed this book from beginning to end and highly recommend it to any thriller lover looking for their next addictive page-turner.
